During this post COVID-19 period, a lot has been going on in the country lately. Asides, the agreviated ASUU strike, and the banning of crypto currency to the seemingly increase in the petroleum price and electricity tariff.

The view of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to embark on a strike action as a result of the hike in the price of petrol and also of the electricity tariff have since spread like wildfire as everyone looked forward to their action.

A lot of Nigerians have applauded their bold step in making the move to remind the government to check it’s esteems especially during this injury time of the post COVID-19 pandemic where a lot are struggling to rise from the shackles the pandemic left them in.

Truth be told that the pandemic came unplanned, everyone received the news and the ordeals that followed suit with heavy heart and cleenched teeth. While at the same time teaming up with the regulatories of the state to keep everyone out of reach of the contagious virus.

In spite of the overbearing decision, most average and low income earners without job security have lost their jobs as a result, while a lot have been in an accumulated debt over the time.

In anticipation to the national strike action that would start effect as of Monday 28th September, 2020. The National Labour Commission broke the news of discontinuing with the strike.

DAILY GIST gathered that the sudden end to the national strike as proposed earlier by the NLC/TUC was as a result of the final conclusion reached between the Federal Government and the NLC. It has been agreed by both parties that the abrupt increase in electricity tariff would be called off for just two weeks and there would likely be no significant change in the increament of the petroleum price. They equally agreed to have a committee headed by Festus Keyamo. This committee whose work for the next week’s is to see to that there is a valid reason as regards the increament of the electricity tariff.

Aside Festus, here are the other members of the said committee.
Godwin Jedy-Agba, James Momol, Ahmad Zakari, Onoho’Ohmen Ebhohimhen, Joe Ajaero and Chris Okonkwo make up the executive for the committee.

Here is an overall view of the duties of the said committee. They are as follows:

1. They would critical observe there’s every need for an increament in the electricity tariff.

2. They would have to monitor the different Electricity distribution companies and the different Electricity as opposed to the NERC standard.

3. They would inspect and offer a viable opinion to the Government on the issue that has made it hard to accomplish the implementation of six million meters.

4. They would equally pay attention to the NERC act review with the sole aim of increasing it’s constituency to include organized labour.

At this point, the obvious reason for the calling off of the said strike action by NLC/TUC could be deduced. So, in the end their outburst wasn’t in vain afterall.
