At least, two persons have died from a violent chieftaincy dispute in Araromi Owu, Ayedade local government area of Osun State.
The clash which occurred on Tuesday, has caused serious panic among residents.
According to reports, violence erupted due to a contest between two claimants to the town’s stool.
As tensions escalated, the palace, a car, and several houses were set ablaze.
It was gathered that the security operatives responding to the crisis were ambushed and injured.
The community has been in turmoil for the past few days, with the conflict stemming from a chieftaincy matter.
A king-designate, who had been in seclusion preparing for his installation, faced a challenge from another individual asserting a claim to the ststool.
The spokesperson for the Osun State Police, Yemisi Opalola confirmed the incident.
She stated that mobile police units have been deployed to the area to prevent further violence and loss of property.
Barrister Samuel Ojo, Special Adviser to Governor Ademola Adeleke on Security Matters, acknowledged the severity of the situation. “We have been on it for the past three days. We have deployed security operatives to the community. I can only confirm two casualties,” Ojo said.
Community sources revealed that efforts to restore peace and order in Araromi Owu are ongoing, as authorities and stakeholders work to resolve the kingship dispute.
