A joint security operatives comprises of Nigerian police, Soldiers and Vigilante in Edo have engaged some unknown gunmen in shootout.

The mission of the gunmen it was gathered was to attack the Sapele Road Correctional Centre in Benin city, Edo state.

It would be recalled that thesame correctional center was attacked by hoodlums during the nationwide #EndSARS riots.

But the joint security forces present at the scene on Thursday were able to averted another jailbreak at the Sapele Road Correctional Centre.

According to reports, there were sporadic gunshots at the Correctional Centre, as a result of Joint security forces who  secured the facility on Thursday.

The vigilante group, it was gathered aftermath the gunshots that lasted for some minutes blocked half of the ever-busy Sapele Road, while motorists scampered for safety.

The Controller of Correctional Centre, Edo State Command, Felix Lawrence, has described the shootings at the Sapele Road, Benin City, Correctional Centre as “disturbance”, by some awaiting trial inmates, especially Jose recaptured after the jailbreak of October 2020 EndSARS riots.

In a statement issued, on Thursday evening by DSC Aminu S. Suleman, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, some awaiting trial inmates started protesting at the facility at about 12.30 pm, resulting in a confrontation between them and the convicted inmates of the facility.

In the statement titled: “DISTURBANCE AT BENIN CUSTODIAL CENTRE”, the issue on behalf of the Controller of Correctional Centre, the PRO said: “At about 12.30 pm, some awaiting trial inmates especially the recaptured escapees started protest which led to a confrontation between them and the convicted inmates. Reinforcement was immediately mobilized from the State HEADQUARTERS to enforce law and order.

“The situation has been completely controlled and the Custodial Centre is calm. There was no escape of any inmates or death.

“Sister security agencies have shown solidarity by drafting their men around the outer perimeter fence to compliment Correctional Service Armed Squad personnel to ensure total security of the custodial Centre.

“The Controller, Felix Lawrence, wishes to assure the general public that they should go about their normal business without any fear. Meanwhile, the investigation into the incident has been instituted by the Controller to unravel the immediate and remote causes of the disturbance,” the statement ended
