BREAKING: OAU Reacts To Death Of Final Year Student, Aishat

The management of obafemi Awolowo University has finally reacted to the death of a final year student who reportedly died as a result of negligence by the health centre workers.

The reaction was contained in statement signed by the Public Relation officer of the university, Abiodun Olarewaju, a copy of which he sent to DAILY GIST on Friday

Recall DAILY GIST had reported how a female student of the university died on Thursday evening after being denied treatment at the University Health centre before giving up the ghost.

The student identified as Adesina Aishat Omowunmi, DAILY GIST gathered until her death was a 400L student of Foreign Language.

The students of the institution who gathered in Large numbers protested at the University campus gate over the incident.

The protesting students were demanding a complete restructuring of the health centres, working emergency department, adequate medical facilities, hiring nurses and doctors who treat cases as a matter of urgency, amongst other demands to prevent future occurrence of student death.

However, the university management on Friday has reacted to the incident

The statement reads in full

PRESS RELEASE.

RE: DEMISE OF ADESINA OMOWUMI AISAT.

The Management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, regrets to announce the death of one of our students, ADESINA, Omowumi Aisat, a 24 – year old, female student of the Department of Foreign Languages. The student reported to the Health Centre on Tuesday, 28th September, 2021 with signs and symptoms of a severe infection. She was promptly treated with some drugs prescribed and asked to report back as an out patient.

A statement by the Public Relations Office, Abiodun Olarewaju, stated that Miss Adesina reported back to the Health Centre in the morning of Thursday, 30th September, 2021. Upon examination, she was referred to the Seventh Day Adventist Hospital for further management where she regrettably died.

The management sympatises with the parents, friends, colleagues and the entire students of the University on this sad loss, and pray for the repose of her soul.

The management will like to appeal to all students of the students of the University to remain calm and kindly refrain from any act that can jeopardise the peace on campus and truncate the on – going Rain Semester examinations.”

Nigerian law mandates that all emergency cases be treated promptly and even prescribes fine and jail sentence for hospitals and their management that fail to treat such cases.
