The Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU, on Monday has commenced a nationwide strike following what it called failure of the federal government to meet it demands and fulfill it promises, DAILY GIST has learnt.
ASUU after it’s marathon meeting which ended on Monday said it has embarked on one-month warning strike.
The National President of ASUU, Emmanuel Osodeke confirmed the Strike on Monday while addressing Journalists.
The decision was reached on Monday at the Union’s National Executive Council, NEC marathon meeting which lasted for two days in Lagos.
According to the union president, the strike will be “comprehensive and total”
The NEC meeting, which commenced on Saturday at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, was a follow-up to earlier public engagement and sensitisation congress meetings of the various branches which necessitated declaration of lecture-free periods across the various campuses.
DAILY GIST gathered that ASUU rounded off its “NEC for NEC” meeting at about 3 a.m on Monday when the branch chairman of the union in UNILAG, Dele Ashiru, confirmed that the national President, Emmanuel Osodeke, would address the media by 9 a.m. on Monday.
The union had earlier disclosed that it would communicate its decision to the media on Monday.
According to ASUU, the strike is to allow the federal government do the needful before embarking on total indefinite strike.
ASUU’s demands include the payment of Earned Academic Allowance, revitalization fund, the replacement of the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System, IPPIS, with the University Transparency and Accountability System UTAS, among others.
While the association continues to claim that it is involved in a struggle for Nigerian tertiary education and Nigerian students by extension, some Nigerians perceive the supposed struggle, marked by incessant strike actions, to be malicious and self serving.
Meanwhile, since the latest agitation by ASUU, there has been no reaction from the relevant ministries and agencies of the federal government.
