Amidst the ongoing leadership tussle among the lawmakers, the Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the takeover of the Rivers State House of Assembly quarters in the state capital, Port-Harcourt.
Operatives of the Nigeria police had stormed the quarters of the state House of Assembly amid the unrest between the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and the 27 lawmakers loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nyesom Wike.
It had been reported that the police took over all the entrances to the House of Assembly quarters located on the Aba Road, Port Harcourt in the state capital.
It was found that both the first and second gates to the lawmakers’ estate were safeguarded by about 30 armed policemen, while about 25 patrol vans were used to block the two entrances.
However, the Rivers State Police Command, in a statement on Friday night confirmed its presence at the quarters.
In the statement by the command’s spokesperson SP Grace Iringe-Koko, it stated, “The Rivers State Police Command wishes to clarify the recent reports regarding our presence at the Rivers State House of Assembly quarters.
“Our deployment in the area is solely aimed at ensuring peace and preventing any possible breakdown of order.
“We assure the public that there is no cause for alarm, and all individuals are encouraged to continue their lawful activities without fear.
“Your cooperation is greatly appreciated as we work towards maintaining a safe and secure environment for all.”
