Nigeria’s immediate past leader, Muhammadu Buhari, has said he is happy incumbent president Bola Tinubu increased the petrol pump price.

He said the decision would reduce the number of visitors he receives in his native Daura town in Katsina State.

Buhari stated this on Sunday at an event organised by the Katsina Consultative Forum at the Presidential Banquet Hall of Government House, Katsina.

Speaking in the Hausa language, Buhari said he returned to Daura, and a lot of people kept visiting him, but when Tinubu increased the price of fuel, he rejoiced because he expected the visits to decline.

He also spoke about the menace of drug abuse in Katsina State, saying the problem must be confronted head-on and defeated for the present and future generations.

His words: “A nation’s greatness is measured by how it safeguards its people. Our youths represent our valued asset, and protecting their well-being is crucial for our nation’s future.

“We can’t afford to watch as drug abuse dismantles their potential and the country’s future. I urge all of us to unite and act decisively against drug abuse in the state.”

Buhari also called for an increased investment in youths to end the challenges of drug abuse in the country.

The former president said the issue of drug abuse must be collectively addressed.

He added that poverty and lack of opportunities need to be tackled to stop drug use among youths in the state.

“I am pleased to be here today not only as the former president but as a concerned citizen of Katsina state who is deeply interested in addressing the pressing issues of drug abuse among our youths,” Buhari said.

“The numbers we have had paint a big picture of how drug abuse is affecting our youth. However, we must address this challenge and remove the menace from our society.

“Our youths represent our beloved assets and protecting their welfare is crucial to our nation’s future.

“We must not turn away from this self-inflicting issue of our youth. We need to confront this issue collectively with determination.

“Our youths are the future administrators of this state. Your potential is immense but it cannot be realised if too many of you succumb to drug addiction.

“Believe in yourself, your abilities, and your future. I know the challenges we face are many, it is in view of this, we would work together to offer you the support and opportunities needed to renounce drugs.

“Leaders, educators and policymakers lead with the profession and set an example by investing in your youth, providing education, employment and social support.

The event was also attended by the immediate-past minister of aviation and aerospace development, Hadi Sirika.
