A vigilante group has killed a Nigerian police officer in a deadly attack in Taraba state.
The police officer, an assistant superintendent of police, ASP was killed in an ambush in Sandirde village of Gassol local government council of the state.
This was contained in a statement made available to journalists by the Commissioner of Police, David Iloyanomon on Wednesday.
He said the ambush was led by the leader of the vigilant group whom he identified as Ali Dissol.
The statement said, “On 4/5/2024, a team of special strike force operatives attached to Government House Taraba State led by SP Jamu Emmanuel, while on routine patrol at Sandirde village in Gassol local government council were ambushed by a group of local vigilante.”
He said the vigilante group shot the officer on his lap, a situation that led to his demise in a hospital situated in the village.
“The unprovoked criminal act of the gruesome murder of the officer was despicable and unwarranted, hence the command has deployed intelligence and operational resources to sustain manhunt of the fleeing attackers and bring the perpetrators of this senseless act to book,” he vowed.
Extending the Command’s condolences to the family and friends of the deceased officer, he re-assured the people that no stone will be left unturned in combating criminality in the entire axis of the state.
The incident is coming a few weeks after the gruesome killing of a monarch in Gassol council by a suspected vigilante group.
