Seven officers of the Nigerian Police Force, NPF have sustained gunshot injuries in violent communal clash in Osun.
The violence clash erupted over a chieftaincy dispute in the Esa-Oke community of Obokun local government area, Osun state
This follows Governor Ademola Adeleke’s appointment of Prince Timileyin Ajayi as the Olojudo of Ido Ajegunle, a neighbouring community to Esa-Oke.
However, residents of Esa-Oke opposed the appointment, arguing that the newly installed monarch is an indigene of Ilesa, whereas the town is a distinct entity from Esa-Oke.
Speaking on the crisis, a traditional ruler in the town, Osolo of Esa-Oke, High Chief Adegboyega Ajiboye, had said some faceless people invaded the town and shot several people.
“The people came in four different 18 seater buses and started shooting people in Esa-Oke. I don’t know the number of casualties we have now, because I am far away from them.”
It was gathered that the district head of the Ido Ayegunle was taken away by the shooters.
Confirming the incident, Osun State Police Command spokesperson Yemisi Opalola stated that seven officers sustained gunshot wounds during the violent confrontation.
Security forces have since been deployed to restore order in the affected communities.
She said: “Police operatives have been deployed to restore peace. Seven policemen were shot when they first arrived in the community.
“When we heard that there was a crisis in the community, we deployed our men to the communities, then they were ambushed. The policemen were trying to clear the trees that fell on their path when they were ambushed. The bullet hit one of them on the neck.”
