In what is coming as a really dramatic development, two teachers at Ibru College, Agbarha-Otor, in Delta State’s Ughelli North Local Government Area have been suspended and ordered to clean the staff toilets for one month
The class teachers, both identified as Mr. Agofure R. and Mr. Etuh G. were fighting within the school premises.
In addition to their suspension by the state government, the teachers have been recommended for transfer to other public schools as a disciplinary measure.
They have also been instructed to report to the Ughelli Zonal Office of the Delta State Post-Primary Education Board for further investigation into the incident.
The school’s disciplinary committee strongly condemned the fight, labeling it a breach of professional ethics and imposing multiple penalties, including an order for Mr. Etuh G. to vacate his official quarters within a month.
The altercation, which drew widespread criticism from parents and educators, was seen as an embarrassment to the teaching profession.
Confirming the disciplinary actions, the school’s principal, Mr. Akporube L.O., emphasized that Ibru College enforces a strict zero-tolerance policy for staff misconduct.
He stressed the importance of professionalism and discipline among educators, warning that any behavior undermining ethical standards would not be tolerated.
Reacting to the incident, Dr. Precious Omoruwou, a Senior Lecturer at Southern Delta University, criticized the teachers’ actions, attributing them to a flawed recruitment system.
She advocated for continuous training and professional development for educators, emphasizing that teachers must uphold high standards of discipline as role models for students and society at large.
