Former Kaduna state governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has visited a church in Imo state, asking south-east residents to register for the Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

El-Rufai, who is one of the leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, speaking during a visit to the church, stated that Nigeria’s democracy rests on the power of citizens to elect their leaders through the ballot.

“The governance of our country is democratic. We elect our leaders; we don’t select or appoint them. That’s why voting is important. Registering to vote is a civic duty, not just a political choice. It is a responsibility every citizen must take seriously,” he said.

In a follow-up address, El-Rufai, described his recent two-day stay in Owerri, the Imo State capital, as unforgettable, noting the hospitality and openness he experienced during visits to churches and meetings with various groups.

His media adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye, in a statement on Saturday, confirmed details of the South-East trip, explaining that El-Rufai considered the engagements a success in advancing national unity and dialogue.

“Owerri has been a great visit. We were well-received everywhere we went. From religious institutions to engagements with stakeholders, political associates and the traditional institution, it has been a consistent pattern of welcome and openness,” the statement quoted El-Rufai as saying.

The former governor said he was deeply touched by the dignity and warmth shown to him, describing it as a true reflection of unity across Nigeria’s divides.

“I am overwhelmed by the grace and dignity displayed by the institutions and personalities that have received us. It is an exemplary display of a Nigerian citizen being made to feel welcome outside of his home area, amidst all the attempts at division,” he added.

Part of the visit included his delivery of the 2025 Odenigbo Lecture at the invitation of the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri. He also addressed participants at the women’s conference of the Anglican Diocese of Egbu and acknowledged the hospitality of His Highness Eze Stephen Kemjika Agumanu of Nekede.

El-Rufai further reflected on an interactive session that took place on his first night in the city, calling it a highlight of the visit. He praised the show of solidarity by Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who attended the event despite health challenges.

“Owerri has been kind and open, and we have enjoyed the time, and we leave with great memories,” El-Rufai concluded.
