A devastating flood has hit Borno state, displacing a lot of residents following the collapse of the Alau Dam on Tuesday
The dam, which had been at full capacity for the past week, gave way, unleashing torrents of water onto the city.
The flood has severely impacted several neighborhoods, including Fori, Galtimari, Gwange, and Bulabulin. Residents in these areas have been forced to evacuate their homes, seeking refuge on higher ground as the waters rise.
Videos that have surfaced on social media platforms have shown streets submerged, with many fleeing to escape the deluge.
The current flood crisis recalls a similar disaster in 1994 when the Alau Dam collapse led to widespread devastation, with nearly half of Maiduguri submerged.
The ongoing situation remains critical, with emergency services and local authorities working to manage the impact and provide aid to those affected.
Vice President Kashim Shettima has assured that the administration of President Bola Tinubu will tackle head long the challenges of flood in Nigeria.
Shettima, who gave the assurance in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital on Tuesday, noted that though the factors leading to the ravaging flood and other recurring disasters in the country are diverse, President Tinubu has already developed a comprehensive roadmap aimed at addressing these challenges head-on.
The Vice President is in Maiduguri for on-the-spot assessment of the ravaging floods that have displaced communities in the state.
Commiserating with victims of the flood disaster, Shettima disclosed that President Tinubu did not only express his “deepest sympathies but has also assured that the federal government will prioritise the welfare of the affected communities”.
