The management of Osun State University on Thursday has announced the suspension of an 100 level student of its Department of English and Literary studies for alleged involvement in conspiracy and robbery.
DAILY GIST obtained this information in a press conference called by the University on Thursday, 13th July, 2023, at its Osogbo main campus.
Recall that news broke on Tuesday, 12th July, 2023, linking Ahiante Victory Ehiremen, a student of the University to the alleged conspiracy and robbery of a Lagos-based businessman.
The state police command had arrested the student for alleged involvement in a robbery incident in Ikire.
Ehiremen was said to have allegedly lured a Lagos-based businessman, whom she met on WhatsApp, to Ikire and consequently robbed him.
The 100-level student and her boyfriend allegedly assaulted the man and transferred the sum of N1.5 million from his account.
But when she was paraded by Kehinde Longe, the state commissioner of police, on Wednesday, the student denied transferring money from the account of the businessman said to be her online lover.
Speaking to Newsmen in Osogbo, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor ‘Ayo Clement Adebooye, expressed shock at the allegation leveled against the accused and inferred that her case was a deviation from the norm of high standards in character and learning that the University has come to be well-renowned for.
Adebooye said Ehiremen’s alleged involvement in the crime was “a violation of her matriculation oath”.
The Vice-Chancellor said “As we all know, Osun State University is widely renowned for our commitment to excellence in academics and core values of responsible, law abiding and highly patriotic citizenry. We remain absolutely committed to these ideals.
“And we do not relent in the pursuit and actualization of these lofty moral standards. This is why in the last six months, three of our former students have distinguished themselves both at national and international levels. Therefore, our university is a brand name and we seek to do everything to protect and guard jealously the good image and reputation.
“The case of Ahiante Victory Ehiremen is a shock to us, even as she is in her first year of study. I got a security report on her case, and with the official information available, an allegation of conspiracy and robbery has been established against her by the Police authorities. Consequently, she is in police custody for further investigations and prosecution.
“Ahiante Victory Ehiremen’s alleged involvement in a criminal act is in violation of her matriculation oath. She has made a written statement which the University has considered alongside the available intelligence report.
“The University authorities have therefore decided that Ms Ahiante Victory Ehiremen be hereby placed on indefinite suspension in line with regulations guiding studentship pending the determination of her case according to the laws of the Federation,” the Vice-Chancellor added.
