In apparently, a preparation for war against the the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Niger’s coup leaders have started deploying military forces to the border with Benin.
Recall that ECOWAS had threatened to use force against the coup leaders to reinstate ousted elected President Mohamed Bazoum if the coupists failed to relinquish power.
The regional bloc in one of its meetings had ordered the deployment of a “standby force” in Niger to restore constitutional order.
However, the Niger junta appears unwilling to budge.
Mali and Burkina, which are members of the regional bloc and also under military rule following coups, have gone further to warn that any military force against Niger would be considered a ”declaration of war” against them too.
With the situation still fluid, all eyes are on ECOWAS to see how it will move on with its plans to restore democracy in Niger and whether in the long run it could avert similar situations in other countries.
In a video which was first posted on social media by counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, shows a convoy of military vehicles moving along the border.
The video was obtained by DAILY GIST on Monday.
Residents were seen hailing the soldiers in the video.
