Cybercrime, popularly known as Yahoo Yahoo, has become a major issue in Nigeria, with many young people engaging in internet fraud.

While law enforcement agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) continue to clamp down on cyber criminals, certain states in Nigeria have gained notoriety for being hotspots of this illegal activity.

This article explores the top 10 states in Nigeria with the highest number of Yahoo boys, based on frequent arrests, online reports, and the display of extravagant lifestyles associated with cyber fraud.

1. Lagos State – The Hub of Internet Fraud

Lagos, Nigeria’s economic capital, is also the leading state when it comes to cybercrime. As the most populous city in West Africa, Lagos provides an ideal environment for scammers to operate unnoticed within its bustling business and tech sectors.

The presence of numerous banks, fintech companies, and internet cafés.

High population density, making it easy to blend in and avoid law enforcement.

Wealthy lifestyle districts like Lekki, Victoria Island, and Ikeja, where fraudsters flaunt their riches.

Access to international connections and modern technology.

Lagos is also home to many Yahoo Plus practitioners—those who combine cyber fraud with traditional rituals (also known as juju or voodoo) to enhance their fraudulent activities.

2. Edo State – The Yahoo Boys’ Training Ground

Edo State, particularly Benin City, is one of the most notorious hubs for cybercrime in Nigeria. Many young boys from Edo see internet fraud as a quick way out of poverty, and the city has produced some of the most infamous fraudsters.

Why Edo is a Cybercrime Hotspot

A culture of peer pressure where young people idolize successful fraudsters.

Many internet cafés, locally known as Yahoo cafes, where young fraudsters are trained.

Some cybercriminals engage in Yahoo Plus, believing that rituals can improve their chances of scamming foreigners.

EFCC has conducted several raids in Benin City, arresting dozens of Yahoo boys at a time, yet the practice remains rampant.

3. Delta State – The Rich Kids of Warri and Asaba

Delta State, especially Warri and Asaba, is another cybercrime hub. With its oil wealth and close ties to the Niger Delta’s extravagant lifestyle, many young people in Delta State see fraud as a shortcut to riches.

Why Delta is Infamous for Yahoo Boys

Warri is known for its street-smart youths who quickly adapt to online scams.

Asaba, the state capital, has become a haven for internet fraudsters due to its nightlife and luxury housing estates.

Many successful Yahoo boys return to Delta State to show off their wealth, inspiring others to join.

The flashy lifestyle in Delta State, with luxury cars, nightclubs, and exotic mansions, often makes it easy to identify cyber criminals.

4. Ogun State – The Yahoo Yahoo Headquarters

Ogun State has earned the nickname Yahoo Yahoo Headquarters due to the high number of internet fraudsters operating in cities like Abeokuta, Sango Ota, and Ijebu-Ode.

Reasons for Cybercrime Prevalence in Ogun

Proximity to Lagos, allowing fraudsters to commute between the two states.

Many tertiary institutions in the state, where young students are introduced to cybercrime.

Hideouts in rural areas, making it difficult for law enforcement to track fraudsters.

Ogun State has witnessed several EFCC raids, especially in Abeokuta, where numerous Yahoo boys have been arrested.

5. Oyo State – The University Cybercrime Hub

With its many higher institutions, particularly in Ibadan, Oyo State has a significant number of young people involved in online scams.

Factors That Contribute to Yahoo Activities in Oyo

The presence of top universities where students engage in fraud to sustain a flashy lifestyle.

Large internet cafés that provide access to necessary cybercrime tools.

A blend of traditional fraud and Yahoo Plus, where some fraudsters use spiritual means to manipulate their victims.

Ibadan has seen several crackdowns by EFCC, but the problem persists due to the high youth population.

6. Rivers State – The Wealthy Fraudsters of Port Harcourt

Rivers State, particularly Port Harcourt, is another hotbed for Yahoo boys. The oil-rich city has a long history of financial crimes, including oil bunkering, cultism, and cyber fraud.

Why Rivers is a Yahoo Boys’ Stronghold

The oil money culture makes fraudsters blend easily with legitimate wealthy individuals.

Many high-end hotels, nightclubs, and lounges where Yahoo boys spend lavishly.

Close connections between cybercriminals and other illegal activities like money laundering.

Port Harcourt has witnessed several EFCC raids, yet cybercrime remains rampant.

7. Anambra State – The Igbo Boys’ Fraud Network

Anambra State, particularly Awka, Onitsha, and Nnewi, has produced many high-profile cybercriminals. Young boys from this region have built extensive fraud networks, both locally and internationally.

Why Anambra is a Yahoo Boys’ Hub

A history of business acumen that some individuals have redirected into online scams.

Wealthy communities where fraudsters invest their proceeds in real estate and businesses.

Onitsha’s large commercial market, which provides cover for illicit transactions.

Many cybercriminals from Anambra State eventually move to Lagos or abroad, making their fraud operations more sophisticated.

8. Osun State – The Silent Fraudsters

Osun State, particularly Ile-Ife and Osogbo, has a growing number of Yahoo boys. The presence of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and other institutions makes it a fertile ground for internet fraud.

Reasons for Cybercrime Growth in Osun

Many students engage in fraud to fund their lifestyles.

The rise of Yahoo Plus, where scammers use charms and spiritual sacrifices.

Osun’s low cost of living, allowing fraudsters to operate quietly without drawing attention.

Despite EFCC’s efforts, cybercrime continues to thrive in the state.

9. Kwara State – The Emerging Yahoo Boys’ Base

Kwara State, especially Ilorin, has recently become a hotspot for cybercrime. EFCC has conducted multiple raids in Ilorin, arresting Yahoo boys in their homes, hotels, and even university hostels.

Why Cybercrime is Growing in Kwara

The presence of the University of Ilorin and Kwara Polytechnic, where students are lured into fraud.

A quiet environment that helps fraudsters avoid unnecessary attention.

Rapid urbanization and economic hardship pushing more young people into internet scams.

Ilorin has become one of the most frequently raided cities by the EFCC in recent years.

10. Akwa Ibom State – The Rising Cybercrime State

Akwa Ibom, known for its beautiful cities like Uyo and Eket, has recently witnessed a rise in cyber fraud cases.

Why Yahoo Boys Are Increasing in Akwa Ibom

Many young people looking for quick wealth opportunities.

Growth of Yahoo Plus and ritual-based fraud.

Uyo’s rising urban development attracting more internet fraudsters.

The EFCC has intensified operations in Uyo, but the issue remains widespread.

Conclusion

Cybercrime remains a serious problem in Nigeria, with several states serving as hotspots for Yahoo Yahoo activities.

While authorities continue to clamp down on fraudsters, the allure of quick wealth keeps drawing many young people into the illegal trade.

As law enforcement efforts increase, the hope is that more young Nigerians will turn to legitimate means of earning a living, helping to reduce the spread of cybercrime across the country.
