The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Fuad Laguda, as the winner of Saturday’s House of Representatives by-election in Surulere 1 Federal Constituency of Lagos State.
DAILY GIST recalls that Femi Gbajabiamila, resigned from the House of Representatives last June and the Speaker Tajudeen Abbas subsequently declared his seat vacant necessitating a bye-election in Surulere Constituency 1 to fill the seat.
Following his appointment as the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Gbajabiamila, tendered his resignation letter on the floor of the House on June 14, 2023 to assume his current role.
The bye-election which was held across the 258 polling units in the constituency, was peaceful.
According to the Returning Officer for the by-election on Saturday, Prof Simeon Adebayo, Laguda polled a total of 11,203 votes.
The APC candidate defeated his closest rivals: Adeola Adebanjo of the Labour Party (LP) and Jerry Afemikhe of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who scored 240 and 278, respectively, with close to 11,000 votes.
With his victory, Laguda, a former APC chairman in Surulere Local Government, replaces Gbajabiamila, who represented Surulere 1 Federal Constituency in the lower house of the National Assembly for 20 years.
