President Bola Tinubu has appointed Mrs. Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change, succeeding Dr. Nkiruka Madueke.
Madueke, who became the Council’s first DG in June 2024, is credited with laying the foundation for the agency’s institutional framework.
Majekodunmi, an environmental lawyer and expert in climate finance with more than 17 years of professional experience, previously served as the Council’s Financial Adviser before her elevation to the new position.
Her appointment was announced in a statement issued Thursday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. According to the statement, the move aligns with Tinubu’s broader climate policy objectives.
The statement read, “Majekodunmi’s appointment reaffirms the Tinubu administration’s commitment to tackling climate change as both an environmental necessity and a driver of sustainable economic growth, national security, and social inclusion.”
Tinubu also expressed gratitude to the outgoing DG, Madueke, “for her dedicated service and strong foundation for the Council’s continued growth.”
The National Council on Climate Change, created under the Climate Change Act of 2021, serves as the country’s top body for coordinating climate initiatives, enforcing national strategies, managing the carbon budget, and mobilising green financing.
