The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife has disclosed that the circular released on Tuesday about senate decision on Students’ protest has nothing to do with it’s decision on Reopening of campus.

This was also contrary to a rumour circulating among students on social media that the management may have fixed 18th of October, 2021 as the resumption date.

The management had earlier released a circular stating the outcome of Senate decision on Students’ protest.

DAILY GIST reports that students of the university took to the street to protest the death of their colleague, Adesina Omowunmi Aishat owing to alleged negligence by the health centre staffs and workers.

The protesting students accused the university’s health centre of poor management of Aishat’s case, and for allegedly delaying in its response when the deceased presented herself to the centre.

The University Senate however on Tuesday, 5th October, 2021 held an emergency meeting to review the situation on campus, following a decision by the Management to shutdown the institution.

During the meeting, Senate mandated the University Management to set up an independent committee to look into the immediate and remote cause(s) of the student’s protest with a view to preventing any future occurrence.

It added that the committee is to submit its report within two weeks.

However, sources familiar with the development in the university senate told DAILY GIST that no decision has been reached on the Reopening of campus.

The school registrar Mrs Margaret idowu Omosule while speaking with DAILY GIST on Tuesday clarified that the University Senate will decide on the resumption date, noting that the circular earlier released on Students’ protest was specific and has nothing to do with school reopening.

She however could not ascertain if the decision to reopen campus will be before committee report that will be submitted to senate in two weeks time or after.

But speaking with DAILY GIST, the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Isiaka Aransi said Students will get to know resumption date after the committee get back to the Senate with it’s report.

The University’s Public Relation Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju also told DAILY GIST that the Senate has not yet decided on date for school reopening.

DAILY GIST reports that the management had shutdown the campus indefinitely following protests that rocked the varsity in the aftermath of Aishat’s death.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO), Abiodun Olarewaju in a statement made available to DAILY GIST said the move was aimed at preventing the breakdown of order as the students, who were protesting over the death of Aishat, blocked two major roads; the Ife/Ibadan and Ife/Ede roads in Ile-Ife, Osun state
