For the past weeks in Nigeria, the weak voices of the annoyed country people could be heard in protest. A lot of angry youths have took over most of the social media platform to rant in hope to get the attention of the Federal Government of Nigeria which in turn would yield immediate action to end the so called SARS in the country.
The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) was founded in 1992 by the former police commissioner Simeon Danladi Midenda. The SARS came into existence as a result of the sarcity of policemen. This was made in an attempt to fight armed robbery and curtail crime in the country.
But recently, following the numerous violence, negligence of human rights, brutality, framing of innocent citizens and extortion of hard earned money from citizens, it has come to light that SARS majorly terrorise the citizens rather than protect or interfer for the just course.
Following the recent report of how the SARS operatives shot a youth on Saturday in front of a hotel (Wetland Hotel) at Ughelli Delta State, Nigeria, the protest of the #EndSars by Nigerians has since tripled.
Well, it did not end there. Recently, the President of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari had tweeted on the 3rd of October, 2020 wishing the USA president Donald Thrump and family a quick recovery form the covid-19 infection. The following day being Sunday 4th October, 2020. The popular and award winning singer popularly known with his stage name Wizkid retweeted a very provokating message to the President. There in the tweet he shunned the President’s misplaced priority, reminding him of the recent SARS brutality in the country. He equally told him to stay clear off the foreigners problem and face his country’s problem head on. In his words, Ayo Balogun’s reaction via his tweeter page reads “Donald Trump is not your business old man! Police and SARS are still killing Nigerian youths daily. Do something!”
Following this trail a lot of Nigerian’s celebrities like, Runtown, Davido, Iceprince, Katehansaw and angry country men had took the mantle further with the hashtags #ENDSARS #ENDSARSBRUTALITY #ENDSARZ #ENDPOLICEBRUTALITY trendings on Twitter social media.
Following this, the most talked about Big Brother Naija Star 2019 popularly known by Tacha or simply Tacha has taken the #ENDSARS hashtag to another level. She disclosed in a video she made on her Twitter page ranting on how Twitter hashtags and word battles wouldn’t save Nigeria anymore. She called on Nigerians to take action and request for an end to the harassment melted upon innocent citizens. In her words “… You think the oppressors will give you freedom? No! You have to demand for freedom!” Following it with a new hashtag #TachaSaysEndSars and a tweet to make a peaceful protest come Thursday!
Majority argued that the SARS operatives and Policemen are just as equal as an identical twin and that ending SARS wouldn’t be enough. While some still believed that and end to SARS is a baby step to curtail the rough killings going on in the country recently.
As an officer of the law, the SARS has no right to end a human life. Every culprit is assumed to be innocent until further proven wrong. And in the course of investigation should be treated as such. SARS operatives should not be carried away with bribe and inhumanity. Random shooting of alleged robbers and or cyber criminals wouldn’t yield any positive effect in the country.
Besides, if the executive arm of the government do not know of the Constitutions or the human rights well, it is assumed that they are not competent and capable of being an officer of the law. Such body should not just be ended but be totally banned from the country as well
