The governorship election in Osun State, South-west Nigeria, is currently going on in all the local government areas of the state.
Sorting and counting of ballot boxes has commenced in polling units.
Results from the governorship election in Osun state are already coming out from different polling Units
INEC has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the election result reflects the will of the people.
It had requested for the deployment of a large number of security personnel in the state for the election to ensure that the process was peaceful.
No fewer than 15 political parties participated in the election including the incumbent, Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, who is the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate; Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party; Akin Ogunbiyi of Accord Party; Lasun Yussuff of Labour Party; Goke Omigbodun, Social Democratic Party; Kehinde Atanda of Action Democratic Party, and Adebayo Elisha of Action Peoples Party.
Others are Awoyemi Oluwatayo of Allied Peoples Movement, Adeleke Aderemi of Boot Party, Saliu Oyelami of New Nigeria People’s Party, Abede Samuel of National Rescue Mission, Ayowole Adedeji of Peoples Redemption Party, Ademola Adeseye Adesuyi Olufemi of Zenith Labour Party and Awojide Segun of African Action Congress.
INEC stated that there are 1,955,657 registered voters. To cover the 30 local governments, INEC had 332 registration areas; 5,305 Bimodal Voters Accreditation System, BVAC; 3,763 polling units; 332 ward collation centres; 30 LG collation centres and a State Collation Centre where the final declaration of results will be made
Although all the candidates campaigned and canvassed votes, the election is expected to be a two-horse race between the APC and the PDP.
It is an opportunity for the people of the state to either replace Mr Oyetola or approve his continuation in office for another four years.
With 1,463,470 eligible voters armed with their PVCs out of a total of 1,955, 657 registered voters, the election is sure to be a make or mar exercise.
The election will be contested in all the 30 local government areas, comprising 332 wards and 3,763 polling units.
