BREAKING: Nigerian Public Varsities Announce Reopening

The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Allied and Education Institutions (NASU) have announced resumption of activities in public varsities across the country.

The union said they have suspended their strike actions after meeting with the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu in Abuja.

The suspension which was announced on Saturday, is expected to take effect from Wednesday.

SSANU’s national president, Muhammed Ibrahim confirmed the development on Saturday.

According to him, the strike has been suspended for two months.

According to the education minister, the Federal Government has committed N50 billion to pay earned allowances for members of SSANU, NASU and the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

However, activities in public universities are expected to remain limited as ASUU remains on strike.

Minister Adamu, who had hinted of SSANU and NASU’s strike suspension on Thursday, said ASUU rejected the government’s proposal over the “no work, no pay” rule.

ASUU leadership had hinted that lecturers will not resume till the federal government has fulfilled all their demands.

But SSANU & NASU said part of the agreement is the decision of the government to set aside the sum of N50 billion for the payment of earned allowances, cogent decision on the University Peculiar Personnel Payroll System, U3PS, the release of the white paper on university visitation panels and funding of the universities.

On the poor funding of federal universities, the Education Minister has directed the National Universities Commission, NUC to ensure that all the schools are up-to-date on what they are supposed to do, otherwise sanctions will be visited on any institution that defaults.

Adami said President Muhammadu Buhari is committed to devoting 15% of the national budget to education.

He said on the salary payment system, the alternative payment systems provided by ASUU, NASU and SSANU did very well during the integrity test and that the Federal Government is awaiting the report of the Technical Committee it set up before taking action on the matter.
