President Bola Tinubu has reacted to the political crisis rocking the Rivers state.
DAILY GIST recalls that Fubara and predecessor, Nyesom Wike have been at loggerheads over what seems limit control of political structure in the state.
The face-off led to some lawmakers loyal to Wike defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
To ensure peace, President Bola Tinubu ordered both factions to sign a peace deal in December last year, which included recognizing the aggrieved state lawmakers loyal to Wike
However the president’s intervention appears to have failed.
On Monday, Fubara declared Rivers State House Of Assembly led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule as non-existent.
The governor said the agreement brokered by President Tinubu is unconstitutional.
Fubara also issued an executive order to relocate the sitting of the State House of Assembly to the state government house.
He cited burning of the chamber of the House of Assembly as reason for the relocation
Speaking on the development, Tinubu clarified that the warring party should focus on governance to the people of the state till 2027, which is the time of politics
The president said he will not tolerate any attempt to frustrate the affairs of the Rivers State Government from delivering dividends of democracy to Rivers People.
Tinubu’s stance was made known by Ajuri Ngelale, the spokesperson to the president in an interview with TVC
According to him, the president’s plans is to ensure a fair, level playing field for the executive and the legislature in the renewed political crisis in Rivers state.
He noted that the president would not take sides in the crisis and that nobody should expect special treatment.
In his words: “If they are banking on Mr. President taking a side in this matter, they are mistaken and will be disappointed. He will ensure that everybody has what they need to work.
“He is also going to ensure that any attempt to deform or frustrate the operation of the Rivers state government from conducting its affairs in a way that will benefit the Rivers people is not allowed by the president.”
