At least, four students and a tricyclist were killed on Tuesday morning on their way to school after a commercial bus crushed them in the Lameco area of Osogbo, Osun State.
DAILY GIST gathered that among the five victims, four of them were students of Fakunle Unity School who were inside the Tricycle going towards the stadium area when they were crushed to death beyond recognition after the commercial bus veered off its lane.
Eyewitness said, “The commercial bus with registration number Abuja RBC 15 ZN was on top speed coming from Stadium but suddenly left its lane and jumped over the road median and rammed into the tricycle conveying the four students of Fakunle Unity School.
“The accident also affected a motorcyclist who was coming behind the tricycle with other vehicles plying the road in front of WOCDIF event centre.
The accident was terrible, five occupants of the tricycle died instantly because they were crushed beyond recognition. I think the driver of the bus slept off on the wheel.”
Another source who is a security agent confirmed that “five people were killed while several others sustained serious degrees of injuries during the accident.
The driver of the bus too was seriously injured and has been taken to hospital. We have towed the affected vehicles to our station.”
When the Sector Commandant of Federal Road Safety Commission(FRSC), Osun Command, Henry Benamaisai, was contacted, he said “We are in the hospital now, we are going to make available the details of the accident soon.”
Reacting in a statement by Mallam Olawale Rasheed, Spokesperson to Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, the governor said he is deeply hurt by the news of the death of some school students and another citizen from a fatal accident that occured in Osogbo, the Osun state capital, in the early hours of today (Tuesday).
A bus and a tricycle conveying students was reported to have collided at the front of WOCDIF in the Ring road area of Osogbo, causing the unfortunate loss of lives and severe injuries to some others.
Responding to the incident, Governor Adeleke expresses deep pain at the disturbing event, conveying the heartfelt sympathy of the Government and the people of Osun state to the families of those touched by the incident.
Governor Adeleke reiterated the call on users of road to exercise caution and adhere strictly to safety guidance on roads, saying the State Government under him will work with relevant authorities to make our road more safer for road users.
While commending the state’s emergency service for the swiftness in responding to mishap as the current incident, the Governor declared the willingness of his administration to continue to pursue efforts to guide against an experience like this.
“I am distraught to hear about the terrible accident that resulted in the death of five people in Osogbo due to a fatal accident while five other people sustained injuries of varying degrees. It is really painful for me, and I want to use this avenue to commiserate with the families of the deceased,” Governor Adeleke noted.
“It is my prayer that God Almighty repose their souls and give their loved ones the fortitude to bear the irreparable losses occasioned by their death. As a government, we will give the needed support to the injured and pray for their quick recoveries.”
