The Police Service Commission has directed senior police officers to retire immediately if they have served for 35 years or reached 60 years old.

This directive comes after controversy surrounding Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, who is over 60.

Recently, Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in 2023, made reference to the controversy that trailed Egbetokun’s tenure by describing him as “illegal IGP”.

Due to the comment, the police arraigned Sowore on a 16-count charge for allegedly publishing false information against the IGP.

However, the Police and Attorney General of the Federation claim his continued tenure is lawful.

According to Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations, the commission reconsidered its 2017 stance allowing force entrants to use enlistment dates instead of appointment dates.

Ani stated the commission reversed this decision due to inconsistency with Public Service Rule No. 020908.

Ani said, “The Police Service Commission… approved the immediate retirement of senior police officers who have spent more than 35 years in service and those above 60 years of age.”

He noted the commission’s previous decision contradicted public service principles and violated Public Service Rule No. 020908.

The directive has been communicated to Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun for immediate implementation.

The commission’s decision was made at an extraordinary meeting chaired by DIG Hashimu Argungu.

Ani added, “The commission’s decision has been conveyed to the Inspector General of Police for implementation.”

The meeting aimed to address retirement inconsistencies and ensure compliance with public service regulations.
