Operatives of the Nigerian police force have reportedly taken over the emir of kano palace on Monday.
The police, according to report storm the emir’s palace in Kano state and displaced the local guards protecting Muhammadu Sanusi, the recently reinstated emir.
The hunters who served as local guards left the palace as soon as the police officers took over the security of the building, PREMIUM TIMES reports
This was said to be a move aimed at securing the main palace for the relocation of Aminu Bayero, the deposed 15th Emir of Kano, following a court order that faulted his dethronement.
The Kano state government had deployed the hunters a rumour that federal authorities planned to relocate Aminu Ado-Bayero amidst the emirship tussle.
Bayero, who was removed by the state government last month, is being guarded by federal security agents at the Nasarawa mini palace.
On Thursday, DAILY GIST reported that a federal high court in Kano nullified all actions of the state government repealing the Emirates Council Law of 2019.
Muhammed Liman, the presiding judge, held that the defendants were aware of an interim order previously granted by the court but ignored it and implemented the Kano Emirates Council Law 2024.
The judge, however, ruled that his order did not affect the validity of the emirate law passed by the state house of assembly.
On May 23, Abba Yusuf, the Kano governor, announced the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi as Emir of Kano.
The governor also ordered the dethronement of Bayero as Emir of Kano.
A security source who spoke about the development at the palace said they have sacked the hunters.
“Did you need me to tell you that they (hunters) are no longer here? You can see it yourself; everyone has found his way”, a police officer at the palace said.
Residents of the area also disclosed that the hunters withdrew from the palace between Saturday and Sunday morning following a court ruling that invalidated the reappointment of Mr Sanusi as emir on Thursday.
“Some of them left behind their machetes to conceal their identity after they were asked to vacate the palace or face the wrath of the security agents”, one of the residents said.
