The National Universities Commission(NUC), has reacted to the list of fake professors in some Nigerian universities being circulated online.

The viral list seen by DAILY GIST on Saturday enlisted some names of fake professors in some universities including UNILAG, UI, OAU, FUTA, Covenant among others

Checks by DAILY GIST reveals that the report was published in December 2019 by Channels TV online platform and it resurfaced on social media platforms especially Whatsapp in January 2024.

This report was credited to the Executive Secretary of NUC, Professor Abubakar Rasheed, in a bulletin published by the commission in November.

But reacting in a statement, NUC described the list ascribed to a Lagos based electronic media as handiwork of mischief makers

It said the alleged list is untrue and could not have emanated from the apex regulatory educational body without due consultation with their accredited universities.

According to Dr. Noel Abiodun Saliu, Deputy Executive Secretary in Charge of its Academic Directorate, explained that such information should be taking as mischievous and unfounded; and could not have emanated from National Universities Commission.

He asserted that such publication should be taking as the handiwork of mischief makers who are our to destroy the hard earned reputation of those prestigious institutions whose names were mentioned and also to undermine the work of the apex regulatory educational agency.

In a statement made available by Adetunji Adeleye, Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs Directorate, Redeemer’s University, Ede,Osun State, as rejected, denounced and dissociated the university from such abominable publication.

He noted that the persons whose names were listed as professors in Redeemer’s University are NOT our staff and have never worked in Redeemer’s University at any point in time, in ANY capacity whatsoever.

He hereby informed the general public that these “professors” are not known to us and anyone who deals with them as individuals or a group, does so at his or her own risk.

He warned the general to be wary of fake news and advised them to always cross check the fact from the National Universities Commission which is the apex regulatory educational body that oversees universities in Nigeria.”

The development is coming following a report published by DAILY NIGERIAN which exposed a certificate racketeering syndicate in neighbouring countries like Benin Republic and Togo, that specialises in selling university degrees to willing buyers in Nigeria.

An undercover journalist, Umar Audu, had detailed how he acquired a degree from a university in Benin Republic under two months and in fact, was deployed for the National Youth Service Corps.
