A serving Nigerian Senator, Shehu Umar Buba has been stripped of his traditional title of ‘Majidadin Bauchi’ for defending President Bola Tinubu against Governor Bala Mohammed.

DAILY GIST reports that the action was approved by Bauchi Emirate Council.

Buba represents Bauchi South Senatorial District in the National Assembly and is a member of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Troubles started when the lawmaker recently attacked the Bauchi governor for tackling Tinubu during the recent protests against national hunger.

The governor had described Tinubu’s speech during the protest as empty, criticising his handling of the nation.

He said: “I listened to Mr President’s speech with rapt attention and with all humility and courage, what he said was empty.

“He did not agree with the situation. He did not address the problems and challenges.

“The new policy thrust of the Federal Government is not working. They have to understand that and it is their problem and their programme that has caused all these problems, so they have to change.

“I have heard and with regrettable attention some of the ministers of the Federal Government saying that we have been given 70 trucks and 500 and something million, how much did the Federal Government make, and what did they do with it?”

However, Buba hit back at the governor, saying the president is not in the same league with Mohammed.

While noting that he and the governor belong to the same political class and were mentees of former Governor Isa Yuguda, he accused Mohammed of being responsible for the hardship in the state.

He accused the governor of not distributing 70 trucks of guinea corn, 70 trucks of fertiliser and 20 trucks of rice donated by the federal government.

The accusations were refuted by Mr Mukhtar Gidado, Special Adviser on Media to the governor who said: “The donations are being processed for distribution. A committee, chaired by the Emir of Jama’are, has been established to oversee this.”

However, in a letter addressed to Senator Buba, the Emirate announced that it had withdrawn the lawmaker’s title.

The letter which was signed by Nasiru Musa on behalf of the Emirate’s Secretary explained that during a meeting of the Emirate Council chaired by the Emir of Bauchi, the Senator’s alleged misdemeanour was deliberated upon and the decision to derobe him as a traditional title holder was arrived at.

The council specifically accused Senator Umar of disrespecting and humiliating the Bauchi State governor

The council noted that actions were at variance with the teachings and culture of Bauchi Emirate.
