At least 551 out of the 879 inmates that escaped from the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre have been recaptured after the Tuesday night attack on the facility.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Shuaibu Belgore confirmed the information while addressing Reporters on Wednesday.

DAILY GIST reported that the terrorists had attacked the prison with explosives on Tuesday night.

The minister in an interview with journalists, said one life was lost on the part of the security forces

As at the time of this report, 328 inmates were still at large while four inmates and an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) paid the supremacy price and 16 inmates sustained various degrees of injuries and are being treated at the moment.

The correctional service with a capacity of over 900 was invaded by armed men suspected to be Boko Haram syndicate, on Tuesday night, the authorities claimed.

Belgore said: “There have been several attacks on our facilities most of them are being repelled but every now and then there is one that they have succeeded. In this one, they came very determined with high explosives.

“The initial entry attempt was unsuccessful then they attack another section of the wall with higher-grade explosives which brought the wall down.

“Reinforcement came when they were halfway through it. They were eventually repelled. At the time they came in, they killed one NSCDC personnel while trying to save the situation

An unspecified number of the Correctional Service staff were injured and are currently receiving treatment at the National hospital.

Official said efforts were ongoing to recapture all fleeing inmates.
