Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara has issued an executive order to relocate the sitting of the State House of Assembly to the state government house.
The governor cited burning of the chamber of the House of Assembly as reason for the relocation.
Recall in October 2023, some persons broke into the assembly and set it on fire.
The incident happened amid speculations that lawmakers were planning to initiate impeachment proceedings against Fubara.
In a document obtained by DAILY GIST on Friday, Fubara said the current state of the chamber was unsafe and constituted a threat to the lives of the legislators and their staff.
He said: “Now, therefore, I, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, the Governor of Rivers State, this 30th Day of October, 2023, pursuant to the powers vested in me under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria hereby issue, order and direct that all proceedings and business of the Rivers State House of Assembly shall temporarily take place at the auditorium, Admin Block, Government House, Port Harcourt, until the repairs, renovation and reconstruction of the chambers of Rivers State House of Assembly.
The political crisis rocking the Rivers state is far from being over. Fubara is at loggerheads with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
Earlier, a high court sitting in Port Harcourt, on Friday restrained 25 members of Rivers State House of Assembly from parading themselves as lawmakers.
Justice Charles N. Wali gave the order, saying the lawmakers seats had been declared vacant.
Martin Amaewhule, the speaker and 25 other legislators affected by the ruling are loyal to Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
They had defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the rift between Wike and the governor.
After their defection, their seats were said to have been declared vacant.
A three-member faction of the Rivers Assembly loyal to Fubara had recently elected a new speaker.
