The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta,FUNAAB on Thursday has cleared Oladokun Ayomide, a final-year student of the institution, from the accusation of poisoning his girlfriend and another lady.
DAILY GIST reports that the Ogun State Police Command had arrested Ayomide on suspicion of poisoning Ugbokwe Mmasichukwu and another lady, Odumosu Semilore.
The police alleged that the suspect laced a poisonous substance, believed to be a mixture of brownie cakes, alcohol, and an unknown harmful substance, and offered it to his girlfriend at his residence in the Surulere community in the Camp area of the city on Friday.
However, in a statement issued by the Assistant Director of the Media Directorate of Public Relations at FUNAAB, Olasunkanmi Olajide on Thursday, new information emerged regarding the incident.
The statement clarified that the cakes purchased by Ayomide “contained a high level of alcohol. This led to the unintentional intoxication of the consumers.”
Olasunkanmi Olajide further stated that investigations revealed that the brownies in question contained a high level of alcohol, leading to the intoxication experienced by the individuals involved, and that there was no deliberate poisoning as earlier suspected.
Ayomide had no malicious intent, as confirmed by the medical examination at their institution’s health centre.
The affected individuals were discharged from the hospital the following day and even participated in their examinations on November 10, 2023.
“It is crucial to emphasise that all charges against Ayomide, brought forth by the parents and the school of the affected ladies, have been dropped due to the lack of malicious intent,” the school stated.
When contacted on Thursday, the command, through its Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed that the student had been released on bail following a settlement by the parents of the students.
“He (Ayomide) is entitled to bail. The girl has recovered, and she has also been discharged from the hospital. The parents have settled,” she disclosed via a WhatsApp message.
