The Nigerian government has made a u-turn on the minimum wage for civil servants in the country.
The government has agreed to increase the minimum wage beyond the initially proposed N60,000.
DAILY GIST recalls that the tripartite committee had earlier insisted on N60,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers.
However, a consensus was reached during a meeting between government officials and labour leaders on Monday night to raise the minimum wage above N60,000.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume stated this in a circular issued at the end of the emergency meeting.
BELOW IS THE RESOLUTIONS REACHED BETWEEN THE TWO PARTIES:
1. The President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria is committed to a National Minimum Wage that is higher than N60,000;
2. Arising from the above, the Tripartite Committee is to meet everyday for the next one week with a view to arriving at an agreeable National Minimum Wage;
3. Labour in deference to the high esteem of the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria’s commitment in (ii) above undertakes to convene a meeting of its organs immediately to consider this commitment; and
4. No worker would be victimized as a result of the industrial action.
