The Christ Apostolic Church, CAC parish in Ibadan, Oyo State has been engulfed by fire in the wee hours of Saturday.
The incident which trapped several worshippers occurred during a night vigil service at the church.
The incident at Wisdom Estate, Road 1G, Olohunda Road, in the Lagelu Local Government Area, was confirmed by local sources on Saturday morning.
Eyewitnesses reported that some attendees had fallen asleep during the vigil when the fire erupted. “The incident happened in the night around 9:30 p.m. I think they were having a Friday vigil. Some worshippers had already slept off, to have some rest before they start vigil when the incident happened,” a source said.
Another account highlighted the precarious situation of an elderly woman caught in the flames. “There was an aged woman, very old to the extent that she could not work properly. She was still inside the church when the fire was raging seriously,” the source recounted.
A church member, speaking anonymously, added, “People were still inside the church during the fire. I will get back to you later, please.”
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.
Akinyemi Akinyinka, General Manager of Oyo State Fire Services, confirmed that firefighters were deployed after receiving a report from a resident named Kunle Junaid. He assured the public that updates would follow as investigations continue.
