The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has revealed that Governor Similayi Fubara has committed an impeachable offence.

Wike noted that it was unheard of where someone will say that three people will constitute the state assembly to make law for the entire state.

The Minister’s comment comes after the Supreme court’s ruling on Friday, which nullified the recent local government elections in Rivers State.

The court also upheld the legitimacy of the 27-member of the Martin Amaewhule-led State Assembly.

In an interview with Journalists after the development, Wike said that the court made it clear that we can’t have a democracy without the legislature.

According to him, the matter has been laid to rest by the highest court of the land.

He said: “There’s nothing like Amaehule faction. Well the court said that the budget should be presented to the reconstituted State Assembly, which is the authentic State Assembly.

“First of all we give God all the glory and honor that today being 28th February, 2025. I always say that the wheel of justice is sluggish but it will always come when it will come.

This matter has been laid to rest by the highest court of the land. The Supreme Court has made it clear that we can’t have a democracy without the legislature.

“It’s unheard of where someone will say that three people will constitute an Assembly to make law for the entire state. It has nothing to do with an individual, whether you like this person’s face or not.

What’s important is: can three people make law for a state?”

Governor Fubara Reacts

The Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has responded to the Supreme Court’s decision affirming Martin Amaewhule and 26 other legislators as legitimate members of the Rivers State House of Assembly — a development that reshapes the state’s political landscape.

In a statement issued by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Joe Johnson, Fubara acknowledged the ruling and emphasized the need to fully understand its impact on state governance and local administration.

“At this time, we are awaiting a detailed briefing on the implications of the judgment. We will carefully evaluate the situation and determine the next steps to take in the best interest of Rivers State and its people,” the statement read.

While recognizing that the verdict reinstates the lawmakers, Fubara pointed out that the root issue of their defection — the event that sparked the controversy — remains unresolved and is still under consideration at the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt.

“Since the issue of defection wasn’t on the table before the learned Justices, in their eyes, Amaewhule and the 26 others are still operating as lawmakers until that matter comes before them,” the statement noted.

Fubara reassured Rivers residents of his administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and acting in the state’s best interest, encouraging the public to stay peaceful and law-abiding as the government works through the judgment’s broader consequences.
