A former head coach of the Super Eagles, Christian Chukwu, has passed away at the age of 74.
His demised was confirmed on Saturday, though the circumstances surrounding his death are yet to be disclosed as of press time.
Chukwu, a towering presence in Nigerian football, had previously been the subject of unfounded death rumours in 2021. He had publicly dismissed the claims during his 70th birthday celebration, expressing dismay at the misinformation.
“I was shocked to hear I had died,” Chukwu said at the time. “People from all over the world were calling to confirm if I was still alive. I’m still trying to trace where the story came from.”
Fondly referred to as “Chairman,” Chukwu made his mark on the game as both a player and coach, leaving an enduring legacy in Nigerian football.
