The Nigerian government has pledged to settle the outstanding payments of the revised ₦77,000 monthly allowance.
DAILY GIST recalls that the federal government had announced an increase in corps members’ stipends from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000 in September 2024.
But the implementation has been stalled. Despite previous assurances, the new rate has yet to take effect.
However, all serving corps members, including those in the scheme when the increment was approved, will receive backdated payments.
Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande made this known during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
While confirming the government’s intention to pay the backlog, he did not specify when the disbursement would begin.
Meanwhile, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu assured corps members that the new monthly allowance of N77,000 will be implemented starting in March 2025.
The DG gave the assurance during an interactive session with corps members at the Wuse and Garki NYSC Zonal Offices in Abuja while reaffirming the commitment of both the NYSC and the Federal Government to the welfare of corps members.
