Adequate security and safeguarding the lives of citizens is one of the essential duties of policemen and other armed forces as they maintain peace and order in society. However, the reverse is the case of SARS ( Special Anti-robbery Squad), as they extort and beat people even to extent that some lives are lost in this brutality.
In a bid to stop this act, The Nigeria youths under the umbrella to put an end to this dismay, ridiculous killings and brutality of the Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) started a peaceful protest with the hashtag #Endsars #Notopolicebrutality in support of different faces, personalities of media and entertainment, like of Fals, Davido, Wizkid, and Co.
The peaceful protest which cut across all the 36 states of the country with youths coming out in groups to express their grievances to the government over the issues that had made a lot of youths lost their lives to these brutal killings.
Following these peaceful protests, exhibited through physical and online, the Government came out on social media through her media aides and the IGP, Muhammad Adamu to address the people on the introduction of the reformation process and recruiting people to a new formed ‘SWAT’.
The protesters added more pressure and disagree on the reformation process and SWAT creation with the reason given that they are the same set of people. The protest goes on for days with people sleeping over all states in anticipation of the Government heeding their pleas.
The peaceful protest was hijacked by hoodlums and some unknown security agencies as they killed some protesters who are protesting peacefully in places such as Osun, Lagos, Ogbomosho, so on.
The peaceful protest was in real combat as destroying properties and various killings follow the protest to the surprise of many who never knew that a peaceful protest like that will turn in such a manner.
On the 20th of October, protesters were at the lekki toll gate following the peaceful protests as being embarked on to fight the bad governance and deaths of some protesters who lost their lives to the killings during the protest.
DAILY GIST gathered that At exactly 6p.m, News got to the protesters that a troop of Army is heading towards the place, and instructions were given to them to hold the Nigerian flags and sing National Anthem which was in line with the Nigerian Constitution.
Suddenly, the troops started shooting and people are running for their lives to prevent being shot at. People at the toll gate were shot at with Nigeria flags on hands leaving many with questions of surprise and arguments.
According to Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwoolu said that investigations are still ongoing concerning the issue and assured Nigerians that the investigation will be properly done and conducted.
