Corruption in Nigeria has grown several wings into different sectors across the country most especially in the tertiary part of the educational sector.

The crazy urge to be among the inclusive top ranked have made a lot of people do the unthinkable not just that, it has equally made them justify their selfish aims with no remorse. Therefore, corruption has continued to eat deeper into the Nigerian society breeding constructive lies, major backups and accomplishes into the system all these time proudly referring to the old saying by Zlatan “if you cannot beat them, you join them” as a map guide. Forgetting the fact that a generalized evil doesn’t make/prove the evil to be the right thing.

Among the many acts of corruption going on in the tertiary institutions today is the the reward of sex for good grades. This is mostly among the female students and the male lecturers in the tertiary institutions. It’s almost impossible to find any tertiary school in Nigeria that is devoid of this particular corrupt scenery It might be less but no lesser than none.

This evil trade by batter has been spread over tertiary institutions across the country that it is extremely hard to believe there’s no such thing as sex for good grade. infact, it is the number one means of Grade Point (GP) survival, the number two being “Sorting”

Most students are more concerned with school examination and how to scale through the toughest examination in flying colours. They dedicate most of their time seeking for the best way to have good grades in examination rather than the teaching learning process.

Again, most times female students are the ones on the receiving sides and for the fact they were singled out and are approached by their lecturer(s), they easily loose their guard and give in to the sexual advances of their so called lectures who were actually meant to act as both the moral, societal and academic authority of the school.

On the other hand, the popular “runs girls” who could be vibrant students of any tertiary institution in Nigeria would delight in Sex for Grade. The fact that they willing exchange sex for money form rich politicians and or sugar daddies, there’s every possiblity that would do same for their grade in the sense that it would make up for the times they spent with zero attendance, no assignment submission, zero practicals report, and low graded quizzes.

Runs girl is a Nigerian slang used to refer to girls who likes to hangout, party and most times have sex with different men for money and other benefits. They don’t hang out with broke guys. Euphemistically, Runs girls replaces the word prostitution.

How To Curb Sex-For-Grade

Like every other hard knotted rooted corruption act, sex-for-grade would not be curb off by mere words or by the mere fact of taking down multiple lists of do’s and don’t’s. It could only be curbed successfuly if necessary decisions are considered and taken into action.

Recall that in the previous article on “CURBING EXAM MALPRACTICES IN NIGERIAN SCHOOLS ANS INSTITUTIONS”, DAILY GIST had rightly stated that Nigerian educational sector should reframe from paying so much attention to examinations. Most Nigerian schools place a mark of seventy percent [70%] or above on examination which is a lot of attention thereby prompting students to focus solely on just examination grade. In contrast to this, more attention should be paid to attendance, class participation, field trips, practical reports and assignment. This way, the notorious short cut method of scaling past examinations only will be short lived.

Again, lecturers who indulge themselves with such corrupt attitude should be duely brought to book. They should be ready to face the wrath of the school authority which includes answering a two paged query, lose of entitlements and school position, few weeks suspension and in some cases permanent job termination. This would serve as examples to other lecturers who would want to manipulate a grade because of some sexual escapade. In the same vein, students involved in this criminal act should be treated same way as a student practicing examination malpractice. Such students should be ready to serve one year or two years suspension or be expelled as the case maybe.

Also, female students should be encouraged to report cases of sexual advances from any lecturer no matter his status in school. This will encourage a lot of novices to not be a victim of circumstances be it rape or compelled sexual molestations/harasment.
