The West African Examinations Council, WAEC has released the results of the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examinations, (WASSCE).

The Nigeria National Office of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Mr. Patrick Areghan announced the release of the results on Monday at a press briefing in its head office, Yaba, Lagos State.

The examination body noted that eight states owing the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, for various services rendered, will not have their candidates’ 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE results, released.

DAILY GIST gathered that about 1.6million candidates sat for the exam.

Patrick stated that the release of results for the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, can now be accessed alongside the certificate of candidates who took the examination.

WAEC lamented the inability of some states to pay for services rendered was posing a great challenge in the activities of the examination body.

The examination body stated that out of a total of 1,613,733 candidates that sat the examination, the results of 262,803 candidates are being withheld “due to reports of cases of examination malpractice.”

Mr Patrick announced an improvement in pass rate by candidates as a total of 1,361,608 candidates, representing 84.38 per cent, obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects with or without English Language or Mathematics.

Also, 1,287,920 candidates, representing 79.81 per cent of the total candidates, obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects including English Language and Mathematics.

He said: “I am happy to announce that candidates who sat for the 2023 WASSCE and have no pending issue can assess their results, including their certificates. “

“About eight states are owing WAEC. We won’t mention them all as some are going to pay.

However, Zamfara and Niger states are the highest debtors. Again Zamfara did not present any candidate for this year’s WASSCE.”

A total of 1,621,853 SS3 students from 20,851 secondary schools registered for the WASSCE. Out of which 798,810 are males, representing 49.25 percent, while 823,043 are females that are 50.75 percent of the total candidature.

According to WAEC, the statistics indicate that there is a further increase and decrease in the number of females and males respectively, compared to the 2022 diet.
