Gunmen suspected to be outlawed indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) millitant on Monday have unleashed fresh terror attack in imo state.
Students in Owerri were left scampering for safety after unknown gunmen returned to the city firing in the air.
The gunmen shot sporadically in different areas of the city as residents and road users scampered for safety.
It was gathered that some of the affected areas were First Bus Stop Irete, Owerri West LGA, around Douglas and Wethral roads; Akwakuma axis and Control post junction.
A viral video of the incident also showed the main gate of the Imo State University being locked because of the incident.
Students of the school were sent back home and were seen among people scampering for safety.
It was not immediately clear what actually happened, but DAILY GIST learnt that the gunmen had arrived Owerri from Aba to enforce the sit-at-home order in Imo.
Although, spokesman of IPOB, Emma Powerful, had said the group had cancelled the weekly order, some members of the organisation were said to have insisted to continue enforcing it.

DAILY GIST earlier reported that some Gunmen attacked and burnt down the police and the Department of State Services headquarters in Nnewi, Anambra State.
Unspecified number of people were said to have been killed during the attack while several others were injured according to reports
Gunmen had also attacked the convoy of a federal lawmaker representing the state, Chris Emeka Azubogu.
A police officer and the driver of the lawmaker were killed while a police station was set on fire.
Azubogu, who defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) few hours before the incident, was not in the convoy when the assailant struck.
Two days before the attack, seven persons, including, Dr Chike Akunyili, widower of Dr Dora Akunyili, former Director-General of the National Agency for Food Administration and Drug Control (NAFDAC), were murdered in broad daylight by unknown gunmen
Dethroned traditional ruler of Mkpunando Aguleri, Alex Edozieuno, was murdered weeks before the killing of Akunyili.
Edozieuno was killed along Ezu Bridge, Otuocha in Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra.
Andy Uba, governorship candidate of the APC in Anambra, on Saturday suspended the flag-off of his campaign due to the killings.
The outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has been on rampage across the South East.
Its however not clear if the killings in Southeast have political undertone or IPOB is behind them.
Currently, banners and bill boards bearing campaign massages are being pulled down while branded campaign vehicles are hardly seen on the streets.
Nigerian flags have also been removed in some public and government buildings for fear of the attack by gunmen.
