The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has announced the full commencement of academic activities, including physical reopening and online platforms, for the second semester of the 2019/2020 academic session.

The management fixed Monday, May 10, 2021 to commence full academic activities amidst safety concerns of COVID-19, Insecurity.

The deputy vice-chancellor (Academic and Research), Prof. Oluwole Familoni made the announcement during a news conference at the senate chamber of the institution.

He disclosed that arrangements for the full resumption were in compliance with the state’s COVID-19 protocols, with the necessary security measures also put in place around the campus to minimise risks and tackle any safety concerns of its students, staff and stakeholders.

Familoni said although the university had an accommodation challenge given the fact that only 8,868-bed spaces were available for about 55,000 students for both undergraduates and postgraduates currently enrolled with the institution, all the eight hostels in the school had been fumigated.

He added that only the students who had been allocated bed spaces would be allowed to stay in the hostels without squatters.

“We will also shift classes of students to higher levels where we have a large number of them like 300 or more and without lecture halls to maintain physical distancing to online,” he added.

Harping on the security measures to ensure safety of staff and students, Familoni said; “We have admonished them not to enter free rides in vehicles with tinted glass, especially female students that are usually carried away by flashy things.

He added that the university, besides the installation of CCTV cameras around campus, had also gone to police stations around the university to help monitor movement around the university and directed the internal security personnel to be more vigilant.
