Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate has announced his running mate for the 2023 presidential election.
Tinubu has picked the former Borno State Governor, Senator Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2023 presidential election.
He made the announcement on Sunday in Daura, the hometown of President Muhammadu Buhari in Katsina State.
Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State briefed reporters at the end of a close-door meeting that lasted about an hour with the President at his residence.
According to him, the choice of picking Shettima as his running mate is because of the former Borno State governor’s competency, capability, and reliability.
This means Tinubu and APC will run a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket in 2023.
The likelihood of the party fielding a Muslim/Muslim ticket had generated widespread criticism, with major individuals and groups, like the Christian Association of Nigeria, rejecting the move as a combination that would not stand.
But the supporters of the candidate and the party had argued that competence, exposure and intellectual depth should be prioritised above religion.
It could be recalled on June 17, that Kabiru Faskari, an APC chieftain, had announced Kabir Masari as Tinubu’s vice-presidential candidate but said the name was submitted in “placeholder” capacity.
Masari was the party’s welfare secretary when Adams Oshiomhole, former Edo governor, was the national chairman of the party.
