Rt. Hon. Oko Jumbo representing Bonny Constituency on Wednesday has emerged as the factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Oko becomes the third Speaker under the current administration after Edison Ehie and Martin Amaewhule as the political crisis in the state deepens.
This emergence of Oko is coming when the APC and the LGA chairmen in the state are calling for the impeachment of the governor.
Jumbo is believed to be loyal to the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
DAILY GIST reports that Fubara, and the majority of the lawmakers in the House of Assembly have been at loggerheads in the state.
The lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly had voted many times to override Fubara and pass new bills into law.
Fubara has found himself in crisis with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike over what appears as control of political structure in the state.
The face-off led to some lawmakers loyal to Wike defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The All Progressives Congress, APC in Rivers State had ordered its members in the state House of Assembly to immediately commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
APC’s impeachment call is coming barely 24 hours after Governor Fubara said the House of Assembly led by the Speaker, Rt Hon Martin Amaewhule, is not recognised by law.
The Rivers State chapter of the Association of Local Government Areas of Nigeria also declared total support for the removal of the governor.
But the Martins Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly has condemned the recent statement by Fubara, describing the lawmakers as “non-existent.”
The Majority Leader of the Assembly, Major Jack, raised the issue on the floor of the House during plenary on Wednesday.
The lawmakers described the statement by Governor Fubara as “unguarded”, and a direct insult to Nigeria
