The Supreme Court has nullified the local government election held in Rivers state on October 5, 2024.
In a unanimous decision on Friday, a five-member panel of the apex court ruled in favour of an appeal filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The court overturned a previous judgment delivered by the court of appeal in Abuja on November 21, 2024, which had upheld the election results.
Justice Jamilu Tukur while delivering judgment agrees with the APC that relevant laws and conditions governing the conduct of the election were not complied with.
Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High court had ruled that the Rivers State electoral body violated the provisions of the local government election law by failing to publish the mandatory 90-day notice before fixing the election date.
