Nigerian soldiers have reportedly opened fire at residents in Anambra state on Tuesday

It was gathered that a yet-to-be identified man has been shot during the incident, FIJ reports.

Sporadic shootings by heavily armed soldiers dispersed voters exercising their franchise at different polling units in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.

After moving a short distance away, a crowd began to form around the man, prompting the soldiers to return, firing sporadically again and sending residents scampering for security.

Multiple witnesses said he had been picked up by the soldiers.

Attempts to record the incident were futile, as soldiers forced all commuters to alight from their vehicles and raise both hands to full length.

Residents of the area lamented that the heavy military presence and sporadic shootings around polling units are scaring voters away.

They also said that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have refused to show up at different polling units.

INEC had declared the governorship election in Anambra state as inconclusive as elections failed to hold ihiala on Saturday due to insecurity.

DAILY GIST reported that a supplementary election in Ihiala LGA was scheduled for Tuesday over violence that stalled the polling exercise in the area
