The management of Obafemi Awolowo University,(OAU), Ile-Ife has proposed new tuition fees for students, DAILY GIST is exclusively reporting.
The decision was reached at the university’s senate meeting held on Tuesday.
A senate member of the institution who attended the meeting confirmed the development to DAILY GIST.
The decision to increase tuition for students may not be unconnected to economic hardships rocking the country which may significantly impact the operational costs of the university.
According to a breakdown of the payment the source sent, both freshers and stalites of Art, law and Humanites in the institution would start paying N151, 200 and N89, 200 respectively from the next academic session.
Freshers and Stalites of Science & Technology would pay N163, 200 and N101,200 respectively.
For Pharmacy & Health Sciences, Freshers will pay N190, 200 while Stalites will pay N128, 200.
The source added that OAU management will release an official circular on the development anytime from now.
DAILY GIST recalls that University Of Lagos(UNILAG), University Of Ibadan(UI), University Of Jos(UNIJOS) among others had also announced increment of tuition fees for students, citing high cost of living caused by removal of fuel subsidy.
This development has continued to receive knocks from various stakeholders considering economic situation of the country. Members of NANS and other student have also taken to the streets to show thier grievances.
Amidst this, President Bola Tinubu denied directing the institutions from increasing their tuition fees, adding that university education remained free.
