The Nigerian senators have engaged themselves in heated arguments over seats at the plenary on Tuesday.
DAILY GIST reports that the senators resumed plenary on Tuesday for the first time at the newly renovated chambers after the sallah break.
However, some lawmakers were not happy about the sitting arrangement in the chamber which degenerated to rowdy session.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio was still giving his opening remarks when the chamber became rowdy as lawmakers argued over the seats they were given.
The trouble started when Senator representing Gombe Central, Danjuma Goje, and the Senator representing Zamfara North, Sahabi Yau, expressed displeasure over the seats assigned to them in the house.
It was gathered that Goje and Yau, sitting on the second row on the right side of the aisle, did not like the seats allocated to them by the Senate Committee on Services.
Sunday Karimi, senator representing Kogi West, is chair of the Senate Services Committee.
The four-term senators subsequently insisted that they should have been assigned seats in the front row on the extreme right—opposite the row of the majority leader and the deputy senate president.
After the argument, Kawu Sumaila, senator representing Kano south, called for a “point of order”, which was ignored.
However, the Senate President called on the Senate Leader and the aggrieved Senators surrounding him, to approach him, which they did and eventually paved way for Akpabio to read his welcome address after normalcy was restored.
After Akpabio’s welcome address, an emergency closed-door session was called for by the Senate Leader, apparently to diffuse the bottled anger among Senators over the sitting arrangement.
