Not less than five students of Ladoke Akintola University (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso, Oyo State have lost their lives in a fatal accident in Osun state.
The driver of the 18-seater bus which caught fire at Ojutu area of Ilobu was also killed in the accident which occurred on Wednesday evening.
DAILY GIST gathered the students, who are final year students of Accounting Department were coming from an excursion in Erin-Ijesa Waterfall area of Osun State when the ugly incident happened.
According to report, the incident occurred around Ilobu-Okinni-Osogbo road in Osun State while they were returning from their visit to the waterfall.
Eyewitnesses in the area revealed that the Mazda bus burst into flame on speed and the six victims were burnt to death on the spot while five others sustained various burnt injuries.
Six other occupants were said to have been rescued by the operatives of Osun Ambulance Scheme that responded to the distress call from the scene of the accident.
It was learnt that one of the deceased, Adedoyin Faith, was the first son of Majority Leader, Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon Sanjo Adedoyin (Sanjay).
The bus which conveyed the student caught fire while the cause of the accident is unknown as of the time of filing this report.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Thursday, the Osun Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corp, Agnes Ogungbemi said the incident was due to speed limit violation and loss of control.
She stated that some of the injured victims were taken to Uniosun Teaching Hospital in Osogbo while others have been taken to a private hospital in the town.
She added that the three mobile phones recovered at the scene were handed over to the police.
The school Public Relations Officer, Mr Lekan Fadeyi also confirmed the accident in a terse statement issued on Thursday
He said lives were lost in the accident but could not confirm the numbers as he is yet to receive more information on the incident.
“I can confirm to you that there was an accident while some students passed on but I have not gotten the details of their identities,” the school spokesperson said
It was gathered that the students had organised an excursion to Erin-Ijesa Waterfall after their first semester exam as part of their activities as final year students.
