27 residents of Okija community in Anambra state have reportedly lost their lives in a stampede
In a similar incident, at least 10 people have reportedly died, with many more injured in a stampede at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja.
Scores of others were reported to have been injured
The stampede, simultaneously occurred on Saturday morning in Anambra and Abuja during events for the distribution of Christmas rice.
The dead and the injured were trampled upon in the rush for the rice being shared as palliatives at the events
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the stampede ensued following large number of persons who had come for the palliative which surpassed previous years exercises..
In a video obtained by DAILY GIST, Sympathizers expressed sorrow over the incident.
The incident depicted the dire economic struggles faced by many in the country.

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, ordered the probe of the two tragic events and warned against unauthorized distribution of palliatives and funfairs across the country.
The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs Zubaida Umar, called for proper crowd management during distribution of charity to prevent stampedes and avoidable loss of lives.
