A Kano-born atheist, identified as Bala Mubarak has been sentenced to jail after he pleaded guilty to committing blasphemy against Allah (SWT) and Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
Bala, who is the president of the Humanist Association of Nigeria made headlines in 2020 when he was arrested at his residence in Kaduna over blasphemy and incitement.
However, when he was arraigned on Tuesday, his lawyer had told the court that his client had a mental problem, for which he was treated at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano.
But Bala objected his counsel’s argument, and prayed the court to go ahead and convict him.
Consequently, the judge sentenced him to prison.
