Situation appears to be getting worse in Borno State as protesters were reportedly shot on Thursday.
DAILY GIST reports that citizens in the state took to the street express their frustration over the economic hardship.
Similar demonstrations are taking place in other part of the country.
In a video uploaded by News Central on X, a correspondent at the protest ground in Maiduguri, Borno State gave a situation report to the TV presenter.
The moment was interrupted by the discovery of a protester who had been gunned down following the report of gunshots being fired earlier.
“People are protesting now in Maiduguri, Borno State capital and we’ve heard the sound of gunshots or is it something like that… This is the situation.
“We will get to the attack… One person is down!”, the correspondent shared.
When asked if the development is in regard to the protest, the correspondent answered in the affirmative while running to avoid being hit by stray bullets.
“Are they shooting at people”, the TV presenter asked, to which the correspondent answered, “Yes.”
Pandemonium broke out in Bulunkutu area of Maiduguri when an immigration officer accidentally shot himself thrice on the foot while blocking protesters.
The sound of the gunshots further provoked the protesters who went wild with the thought that one of them was shot but became calm on discovering that it was an immigration personnel that was shot.
The self-wounded officer was part of the security team deployed to disperse crowd of protesters in the state capital, Maiduguri.
The officer, whose identity has not been disclosed, was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment and his condition is currently unknown.
The angry protesters, in their hundreds, have mounted roadblocks, preventing vehicular movement and breaking windscreens of private and commercial vehicles that insisted on passing
The young men and women protesting were seen chanting anti-government songs, carrying placards with the inscriptions: “Ba ma yi”, “Tinubu must go”, “End the bad governance” and “there is hunger”.
One of the protesters, who gave his name simply as Muhammad, said they would not be deterred by the teargas, or even gunshots while exercising their constitutional right to protest.
“We want the world to know the kind of injustice meted against us by the police. They shoot teargas at us while conducting our peaceful protest and that would not deter us,” he said.
